Me and blogging: Epic Fail.

Yeah. So I suck at updating this blog.

Why I fail at blogging

Partially: I can get super lazy about these things, as anyone who frequents the Reflection forum will probably know. I really don’t mean to be so slow at responding. For my PhD related stuff I try and be quick at responding.

Sometimes I find it hard to concentrate solely on one thing. By this, I mean that I have a project that needs completion and will work at a frenetic pace until it is 98% done. And then I get up the next day, and the final 2% gets ignored because I’m onto the next thing. So I have bunch of stuff that is almost there – but not quite.

Also partially: this term is turning out to be incredibly busy for me – much busier than I had expected – for the following reasons.

So yeah. Pretty busy all around recently, which has left very little time for blogging, photography, or any of my other hobbies.

Lecturing has been an interesting experience. I actually took MA117 when I was a first year undergraduate many moons ago, and was a TA for the past two years, so I’ve seen it from both sides of the fence. The first lecture, which was today, actually turned out pretty well. But it gets tough real quick, so a better evaluation will be in a couple of weeks.

However I feel like I’m pretty prepared. Lectures and lab session notes are (mostly) prepared all the way through to week 8 of term.

It’s testing my programming out pretty well too. I’m coding Java for MA117 (obviously), C++ for MA903 (duh) and a mixture of C, C++, Fortran and Python for my PhD work. Nice to keep up to date with the languages.

Getting back to it

I feel a great sense of disappointment that I’ve not got much stuff done. On the programming side, there are three things I want to polish up and get published on here.

  • Reflection 1.2. This is under development, but I need a final push of about 2 solid days to get it done.
  • mjwrapper. This is a new project of mine. Unbeknownst to you guys, I have taken up drumming as an additional hobby (yeah, I didn’t have enough, right?) So I constructed an electronic drum kit, which uses something called MegaDrum to convert drum hits into MIDI notes.MegaDrum is awesome. It has a remote control utility called MegaDrum Config Tool which is written in Java, and uses the Java MIDI API, which I have to admit is pretty good. But it doesn’t work on Macs. Why? Apple is stupid and doesn’t supply an implementation. There are a couple commerical ones; mmj is the most popular. But I’m a big fan of open source, so I wrote my own.

mjwrapper is perilously close to having a 0.1 release. Just need to finish the last 2%.

  • Java to BLAS/LAPACK converter. This is something I knocked together just yesterday for MA4G7. There are a few Java students on the course (no doubt to MA117) and there’s no set method, as far as I can tell, to call BLAS and LAPACK functions through Java. So again, I wrote one.

And then of course, on the photography front, it would be useful if I could get out and actually take photographs. 2009 was a pretty poor year in terms of quantity of photographs taken, but the quality looks better.

Finally the blogs… so much to do on that front, I don’t even want to list it!

Anyway, enough for now. More updates to come. Honest!

I hate the recession (and also Gordon Brown)

So, we’re currently in the first stages of deciding where to go on holiday this year. Along with this comes a decision on what photography gear I’m going to be upgrading or getting rid of. This time last year, it was the Sigma 30mm for my trip to NYC – which, coincidentally, is for sale if anyone’s interested. The reason is that this year, I hope to get enough money together to make the final push in terms of my photography-gear-ambition: go full-frame.

All of this leads us neatly onto the title of today’s rant. I had enough spare cash last year to afford the Canon 35mm f/1.4L. I got it used for precisely £610 including delivery; however, I distinctly remember checking the various websites and the price being around £850 brand new.

Cut to today’s recession. The same lens, from the same retailer, will set you back an eye-watering £1133.99; or, equivalently, an increase of about 30%. Ouch.

The reason is that Canon, like all of the other big camera manufacturers, is a Japanese company and hence all stock needs to be imported to the UK. With Gordon Brown doing a sterling job of devaluing the pound (see what I did there?) by borrowing at an alarming 40% of our GDP, the yen is the strongest it’s been in a long time. Essentially if they don’t put the prices up, their profit margin will be significantly decreased on UK sales.

So my plan is now scuppered, because it involved selling the 10-22mm which is very dear to my heart, and replacing it with a stunning 16-35mm f/2.8L II. Which I can no longer justify because that same lens has also undergone a 30% price increase.

Damn it.

Slacking off…

As you’ll have noticed, there’s not been many postings recently, neither photo nor text. To be honest, it’s been a bit weird: after having worked hard for 4 years on this degree, it all suddenly stopped and so I’ve been a little down and lacking in energy. Ultimately this has culminated in me becoming a bit run down and catching a cold – usually it picks up from this point onwards.

Felt a bit more with it this evening, so got around to doing some website work that had been pending for some time. Bit late now, so I’m going to bed and will update more tomorrow morning.

Jessops are not winners

I’m not about in Coventry at the moment, but I will continue to update the blog. With a bit of luck, some photos should be coming up soon since I have (another) new toy.

As a quick update, my Sigma sold for £110 inc. P&P, so somebody is getting a nice lens for a good price there. I had hoped to get about £130, but there we go – market depreciation does indeed suck the big ones.

Time sucks

I find that increasingly these days I’m using the phrase “I don’t quite have the time at the moment…” For those who think I’m putting it on to get away from talking to them, I assure you it’s quite genuine. Right now, I have rather a large to-do list.

Referenda at the Students’ Union

So, it’s referendum time at the Student’s Union. I severely dislike our Students’ Union (mainly because of their obscene drinks prices and general “let’s have an AGM about what type of teabags we should all use” attitude), but this year, an interesting motion has come up:

Lack of Confidence in the Students’ Union
The Students’ Union does not have the confidence of its members, and should regain their confidence.

I happily voted for this motion. Take that.

Back to programming then. Sigh.

Is it really this hard to find a dissertation?

Reasonably regular visitors to the site will know that I’m now in my fourth year of a mathematics degree at the University of Warwick. A good sized chunk of this year’s credit is given for a dissertation on a subject of our choosing; we can either choose to write about some kind of mathematics in action (the MIA project) or a research project, which involves finding a supervisor willing to sponsor you on a topic of your choosing.

As I’m hoping to continue further with my education, possibly going onto a PhD, I chose to do a research project. This post is basically an entry describing my particular woes finding an appropriate project, and it’s quite long; unless you’re interested, it’s best not to continue further!

Not the best start to term

Firstly, I’m sorry about the lack of updates. I’ve been really up to my neck in work and preparations for various things and university. I will at least try to post some kind of rubbish at some point.

Anyway. Moved into Claycroft on Sunday, but I’m already starting to regret doing so really. It’s exceptionally quiet – on my corridor of eight, I’ve only met 2 other people so far. It’s somewhat depressing really, as it’s would be quite nice to be able to talk to somebody before going completely insane from lack of contact. I’m going to give it a couple of weeks, but if things continue the way they are, then I might move out. I’m not sure yet. The major plan at the moment is to spend as much time as possible in the maths department so that I can avoid the complete silence of Claycroft.

Why driving sucks.

Just so you all know, never ever use Budget Car Insurance. I pay by monthly installments, and as I’m selling my car, I no longer need the policy. So, upon enquiring about cancelling said policy, I was told that I not only had to pay a cancellation charge, but they would require a back-payment on the amount I already paid as I am in ‘breach of contract’. The cancellation charge, therefore, was in the region of £145.

So, I’m not left with many options now. I either pay the fee, or I’m considering buying a small runabout and changing the insurance over to that car (which I believe I can do without a penalty).

I will update more on this later, but for now, I’m a little tired so I’ll go.

AJAX Search is up

Well, after a bit of fiddling, the AJAX search is now fully operational. I think it works pretty well – it’s certainly quite transparent and saves a lot of room. It hasn’t been fully tested yet please let me know if you run into bugs.
IE had some… interesting rendering issues that need fixing in relation to opacity. For some reason, if you don’t set a background colour then font rendering goes completely crazy and everything looks awful. The moral of this story: IE6 doesn’t like opacity unless everything has a background.

Other than that it has been a pretty busy day. I’ve been up and down to Coventry. Most of the time the journey is fine, but today the M6 decided that it was going to hate me. It took me two hours to travel about 25 miles – average speed, 12.5mph. Usually I can do it in half an hour.

The trip did serve a purpose, and hopefully in a few days time I should have a clearer direction of where the project I’m working on is going. However, for the time being I will simply leave you with a lovely formula to show off my LaTeX renderer, as I really must be going to bed.
