Reflection: Photoblog Theme
Due to popular demand, my photoblog theme — the creatively named Reflection — is now available for download.
Update: Reflection 1.1 has now been released.
I was quite shocked by the amount of people that said they wanted this thing. I thought it was actually okay, but not good enough to publish. However people seem to think otherwise so I decided to put it up.
Design-wise it’s all very simple. There’s a heavy amount of AJAX behind the front page, but it’s handled in a graceful way should JavaScript not be running. Everything on the site uses mootools for any AJAX requests or effects, which is a cracking little library. By far and away the best 3rd party JS library I’ve ever seen.
Anyway. If you want it, go grab it and tell me what you think.

Dave, I love the theme – thanks so much for letting others make good use of it!
Also, your photos are great!

Hi Dave,
It’s fantastic! I have successful file download, set permission (cache 777), activate YAP plugin, and select beauty theme.
I tried a post, but i have fatal error message: “call to a member function getThumbnailHref() on a non-object in …/yapb_filter.php on line 9″.
I tried search the function, but i don’t found it. If you know this error then please help me! Thank you!

Any advice?
Thanks.

I can’t seem to get the Mosaic page to work either. I have created a new page with the title ‘Mosaic’ but nothing shows up. Can someone help please?
Thank you!
31/12/2008 12:02 pm
Hi all,
Sorry for the slow response, best to send me an e-mail if you don’t hear anything from me:
gorati:
You probably have a post which does not contain an image which causes this error. I’ll add this to the list of things to correct, but in the meantime you should try to delete any posts which don’t contain images.
analgesia-doc, Justin:
Creating the page isn’t quite enough. You need to select the Mosaic Page template. In WordPress 2.5.1 in the Create Page screen, go to the bottom, click the arrow next to Page Template and change Default Template to Mosaic Page. You can then put in custom content to be shown above the mosaic and call the page whatever you want.
Hank:
I think this is because you’re using PHP4. Try upgrading to PHP5 and see if the error disappears. If you don’t have the option to upgrade, then let me know and I’ll put a fix in for it.

Is there anyway of running this theme without japba and how can the xyloid-photo in the tagline changed?
23/9/2008 9:12 pm
Thanks for the great theme Dave. I really love it. I’m just trying to tweak it now to make it work. Maybe someone can help.
Photo Pages – the photo shows up duplicated in the “shot notes” section. So I have two pictures per page.
Page Names – Dave’s blog (and others) have SEO friendly URLs for their pages. So instead of having pageid=2 or some other number, they are nice URLs like blog.com/thispicture – wondering how people are doing that.
Also – Mosaic Page. Finally got it to work once I created the page and changed template to mosaic but still not linked to from the header bar. Header links to /mosaic/ but my mosaic page is pageid=3. I can change this manually but just wondering if there’s a more elegant way to go.
thanks!
Alan

Hi Dave,
Wonderful theme – am having problems with PHP4 and the T_OBJECT_OPERATOR problem.
I’m not too good with PHP but I’m guessing PHP5 has changed the way the ternary operator works? Or something?
A direction for a fix for your excellent theme would be much appreciated.
T.
28/5/2008 5:17 pm
For anyone interested. Fixed my Mosaic problem. Permalinks needs to be set to active under settings area of WordPress admin.
Still having issue with duplicate photo showing up in shot notes. Might be an issue with Efix data cause that shows up with tons of garbled text as well. Any ideas please email me at alanseideman at gmail dot com
28/5/2008 5:26 pm
Fixed the duplicate shot. Under YAPB plugin options you have to remove the checkbox for display image on single page under auto image insertion sub-options.
28/11/2008 11:27 pm
Hi,
I’ve figured out that T_OBJECT_OPERATOR has absolutely nothing to do with the ternary operator as I thought, but as already mentioned, the fact that my web server is using PHP4 and not 5.
Looks like it can’t be fixed until my host upgrades. Never mind.
T.
29/10/2008 10:56 am
Hi guys,
Thanks for the feedback. Here are some fixes that I’ve sent around in e-mail.
For those of you running PHP4 who are encountering the T_OBJECT_OPERATOR error, edit index.php and change lines 25-26 to:
Thanks to Alan for pointing out how to fix the duplicate shot.

Hi Dave,
Great template!
I’m having issues getting the Mosaic page to run. It’s probably something simple since i’m quite new to PHP…
I keep getting a 404 error, and i followed the steps on your page. Might be something i need to change in header.php. It’s like the mosaic template never gets used.
Thanks for your help
6/5/2008 5:27 pm
Hello Again,
Fixed my problem by reading through the others posts….
Now if i can just figure out how to change from page_id to a nice looking url name…
Thanks.
13/7/2008 7:13 pm
Hey Dave,
The main page ajax navigation on the photos are not working for me. I have PHP 5.2.5 and with the code you say works with PHP5…it won’t for me. The photo displays when I change the code to the PHP4 compatible T_OBJECT code, but then Iit won’t load. Check out my main photo page on my site and let me know what’s up or if I’m editing the wrong line or something. Above you said line 25 and 26, but there are nothing on those lines and my error is on line 20 when I get the T_OBJECT error and halfway-works when I replace those lines.
Thanks.
21/8/2008 8:04 pm
thanks everybody for all the useful tips for this awesome template. i was able to install it in minutes. one thing i’m having trouble figuring out is how to change the title of the header. any information on this would be really appreciated. thanks.
4/3/2008 3:52 pm
Thanks for this template! It is working great except one thing. When I remove the comment link and try to go next/prev image, the photo will change but the info/title/date stays the same as the first photo.
Any ideas?

Just one question, Where can i find version 1.1a?
21/5/2008 5:03 pm

You can’t get it yet, but it’s coming! I’ve fixed several bugs and improved the efficiency of the animations somewhat. There are some more features to come, but I’m going to release an intermediate version for the time being.

Hi there, love this theme!
Couple of problems: thumbnails on the mosaic page click through to a page-not-found page, and likewise the random link on the main page.
Any ideas what I’ve done wrong?

Dave–
Thanks so much for the theme. I’ve been using it forever now and love it. I’ve customized it a bit for use on my site and deleted the function that makes it AJAX navigable on the main photo page. Any hints you can give me on returning that to normal. (I took it out because my server didn’t upgrade to myPHP 5.25 for a while and it would only display the error message.) Thanks. You can just send it to the email listed.

Great theme Dave. And Cheers Alan for following up with the solutions to your problems. I was having the exact same problems, and was about to give up, but took your advice and got everything clicking.
Dave – it might be worth it to list the bits about changing from the default template to the mosaic, the permalinks turned on (to go to /mosaic/ instead of ?pageid=x), and the duplicate images (in YAPB plugin options, removing the checkbox for display image on single page under auto image insertion sub-options). I was beginning to think the theme wasn’t compatible with WP2.7…
27/8/2009 8:52 pm
Seriously a great theme. I’ve been tweeking it to get it just how I like it, and I realized that the chronological left-to-right of the navigation is opposite that of the mosaic thumbnails. I’ve been trying to modify it to go to the “right”, and swaping the prev_post and the next_post functions does the trick… all except for the default image (most recent) which still shows [Prev]. I know it’s just a minutia, but as an reader of a left->right language it just feels intuitive to have the interface work that way too (much like other photo gallery interfaces).
Has anybody else confronted this yet?
27/10/2009 10:09 pm
Ah, here’s a fix. In blog.js, change:
src:this.templateDir+’/images/’+(el.id==’overPrevLink’?'prevlabel.gif’:'nextlabel.gif’),
styles:{top:”30%”,position:’absolute’,border:0}
}).injectInside(el.id);
if (el.id == ‘overNextLink’) img.setStyle(‘right’, 0);
to this:
src:this.templateDir+’/images/’+(el.id==’overNextLink’?'prevlabel.gif’:'nextlabel.gif’),
styles:{top:”30%”,position:’absolute’,border:0}
}).injectInside(el.id);
if (el.id == ‘overPrevLink’) img.setStyle(‘right’, 0);
And in style.css, swap left and right to:
#overNextLink{left:0;}
#overPrevLink{right:0}

Hi everyone – maybe someone can help.
Some thumbnails don’t generate on the mosaic page. Anyone come across this issue? My page is at http://theworldisjumping.com/mosaic/ – maybe something to do with the source file I’m uploading?
Also, anyone have any thoughts on integrating this with Flickr Blog this option? It would be easier not to have to manually upload pictures.
thanks
alanseideman at gmail dot com
8/3/2009 3:09 pm
Ok fixed my own problem again. The thumbnails won’t generate if the source image is too large.
This uncovered a different problem though. If images are too small (dimensions) then the reflection at the bottom will act strangely. It cares what size portrait shots are vs landscape too.

Hey Dave, I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your photoblog. It is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. I just have one question…
Is it possible to mess with the CSS (or whatever it is, but I believe it is the CSS) to make the blog act like the DUOTONE theme of wordpress.com?
In case you are not familiar with this theme, it can be found here: http://duotonedemo.wordpress.com/2008/12/23/welcome-to-duotone/
Basically what I want to do is keep your exactly layout, however add the ability to add the color matching matte for each photo, as this blog does.
Thanks, and congrats on making such a beautiful photoblog!

Hey, this Theme ist very very great, after a few problems with uploading my pictures it works fantastic!
Just one thing I could’nt find out how it works.
If People Visit my site, they just see the page “at all”.
Then there are the few sites:
Home
Gallery 1
Gallery 2
Contact
Can I made a setting, that the visitors get to the site “home” at once?
Like it is now, they have to click at the site “home”, when they get to the main page they see no page, you understand?
The thing is, I want to get a nice black/white picure at the front site, from there visitors can click at the different pages (home, gallery, and so one…)
How can I make it, that at the front page I get a picture?
I hope I have written it that all are understanding..
Im not used fo write in english ^^
Thanks for response! (In english or at best: in german!!)

As I was trying to post my first picture, I created a first post and uploaded my image using the “Add Image” in the “Edit Post” section. It worked fine but when I publish, no picture shows up
Am I supposed to add pictures using another way?? Or is my wordpress not working properly???
PLEASE HELP!!!
Thanks

Hi Dave,
Just wanted to say I like the simplicity and elegance of your theme. Many themes out there are over-designed, and those that go for simplicity often just look sparse and incomplete. Yours looks complete and polished, yet the look and operation are very simple. I also really like the reflection effect. Keep up the great work.

Ciao there!
My name is Gregorio and I read this board now quite some time and I ought to declare, it is truly a grand location to be.
Previously I was constantly the person looking for aid and help here and I have the impression it is time to give a bit in return
Some time ago I experienced a lot of problems with my roof and I desperately searched for help. Either it is entirely overpriced or the quality is very bad. My quest finished, as I found this impressive company. Look below and if you have trouble with your roof, just call them. They do famous work!
