MacWorld Expo and the iPhone

Well, although there wasn’t a live feed this year, I did watch the live updates from the various sites around the net. Boy, am I pleased when they announced that iPhone.

Yes, it’s stupidly expensive and is locked into a crappy carrier, and no, we won’t see it until the end of the year in the UK. No, there wasn’t any upgraded iPod. Nothing on Leopard, nor on the supposed Mac Pro. But just sit back and think about this for a second - this is just the beginning. Apple clearly has an awful lot of new stuff planned for 2007, and I’m quite a firm believer that, given time, we’re going to see some absolutely killer products.

Before I talk about that, I do want to talk about the iPhone. It’s incredibly impressive, and pantwettingly gorgeous; there’s no doubt in my mind that it just blows every other “smart” phone out of the water. Yes, it’s extremely expensive at the moment. But this thing is going to sell like hotcakes to businesses, and that’s going to drive the price down incredibly for us lowly people.

As for the lock-in to Cingular, I’m reasonably convinced that it’s a temporary 6-12 month deal. I’m fully expecting the phone to become SIM-free by the end of the year, and the rubbish 4/8GB flash memory to be swapped out for larger flash cards, or possibly hard-drive models.

Certainly the entire thing lends itself towards the much sought-after touch-screen iPod, and I’m betting that’s going to be out within the next 2-3 months. The new interface looks absolutely amazing, and I’m not going to be upgrading in the near future, that’s for sure.

I’m left in a bit of a difficult situation though. Right now, I’m 90% certain that by the end of 2007 or beginning of 2008, there’s going to be an iPhone out there with a large hard-drive in the £300 region. But the waiting might kill me, so I might have to buy a touch-screen iPod as well.

We shall see - but in the mean time, be patient! This is going to be a great year for Apple, no doubt about it.

You know’s it. I’m thinking I’ll go for a touch screen iPod when they arrive, since my current one is full and getting reasonably old for an iPod. I think I’ll hold back on the iPhone for a bit though, I’d like it to have 3rd party app support so I could use it as a sat nav system in my car, and also battery life isn’t that great at the moment. However, it is a gorgeous piece of machinery, and the scrolling jiggery is just wonderful. I can’t wait to play on it in an Apple store :D

It’s going to be awesome, no doubts. We’ll just see if my patience will hold for the iPhone - I might end up just getting the touch-screen iPod when it comes out.
